  • This is a shining example of the problem with privacy: Once a piece of information like a credit report exists, without ironclad legal protections it will become demanded and used for purposes OTHER than the typically benign or noble-sounding one originally intended or advertised.

  • Re: Article. The UK system looks a lot more fixable than the U.S., especially given the fact that other national systems are better models and have their own track records. I think Luxembourg is the "Cadillac," with the highest costs but still 20% below the U.S.

  • Housing is still overvalued by quite a bit if it's at 2004 levels. Consider that median income after inflation is DOWN since 1999, and expenses like food and gas that people weren't paying much attention to then are a problem now.

  • What's likely to happen with this is that travel companies will do what credit-card companies do and try to impose MANDATORY ARBITRATION to deny consumers any chance of a day in court. What's really needed is for Congress to level the playing field and to stop that sort of thing.

  • Republicans are ALWAYS well-funded in presidential elections. Even if the candidate is one like McCain that they don't particularly like, part of the base will still write the $2,300 checks (plus thousands more for the party or other sources).

  • The hard thing with coupons is to not have them "incentivize" spending that would not have happened otherwise! It takes practice and discipline to ONLY clip what will actually bring spending down, but the good news is that once you get to that, it's not hard to keep it up.
